• Tree Cracks and Cankers – Deep slits in the bark is usually a sign of disease. Cankers are holes in the bark that increase the chance of a stem or limb breaking.
• Weak Tree Branch Unions – When two more branches grow too closely together, bark can grow between them. This can create a condition where branches are not closely connected to the tree. Weight from snow or prevailing winds can easily cause a limb to crack or break off and cause damage to property, or worse, cause bodily harm or injury.
• Tree Fungi – Fungi on any part of your tree could be the result of decay. And decay, if it’s on the inside of a tree, can be hard to detect. By the time it’s discovered a tree can literally be damaged beyond recovery.
• Tree Architecture – While the term architecture isn’t normally associated with trees, if fits the scenario because trees can be lopsided, or stand straight and tall. There’s an old saying that one should “bend the fern while it’s young.” Young growing trees can be conditioned to grow straight and tall with proper pruning. On the other hand, storm or high wind damage can permanently damage or bend a perfectly healthy tree.
• Exposed Roots or Root Decay – Root rot, or decay, is a common cause for disease or death in trees. Roots are an integral part of a tree's health. Trees that easily blow over often do so because of root rot. They can even topple under the weight of their own leaves and limbs.
